Every October, health campaigns worldwide focus on educating people about the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
How to fight breast cancer
Breast cancer is a disease that occurs when breast tissue multiples and grows out of control, forming a lump or tumor. Most breast cancers occur due to breast tissue aging. Fewer than 10 percent of cases are from inherited breast cancer genes. Breast cancer occurs in men and women, but the majority of cases occur in women over the age of 60.
Detection and preventive measures
Talk to your physician about breast cancer screening. Screening mammograms can be an essential tool to detect breast cancer early. Depending on your age and risk factors, your physician will recommend an appropriate screening strategy Avoid alcohol and get plenty of exercises. Alcohol intake, inactivity, and obesity increase the risk of breast cancer Seek medical advice promptly if you have breast pain, skin changes, nipple discharge, or masses Mammograms and other tests are available at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH). Dhahran, Health Center, JHAH Main Entrance (Arabic & English awareness booth and materials for males & females) 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. To educate the public, particularly Saudi Aramco employees, on the importance of breast cancer awareness by providing educational materials that clearly explain the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and other benign tumors through self-breast examination, which aids in the detection of early signs of breast cancer.
Aramco Planning & Support Unit, Dhahran (English awareness lecture for males & females) 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. To educate women of all ages on the importance of self-breast examination in detecting early signs of breast disorders, not limited to breast cancer and other benign tumors. Particularly stressing the importance of mammograms in detecting early signs of breast cancer.
U.S. Consulate, Dhahran (English awareness lecture for males & females) 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. To educate the public, particularly USA consulate employees, on the importance of breast cancer awareness by providing educational lecture that clearly explain the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and other benign tumors through self-breast examination that aids in the detection of early signs of breast cancer symptoms.
Ithra (English awareness booth and materials for males & females) 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. To educate women of all ages on the importance of self-breast examination in detecting early signs of breast disorders, not limited to breast cancer and other benign tumors. Particularly stressing the importance of mammograms in detecting early signs of breast cancer.

ISG American School (English awareness lecture for students and teachers) 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. To educate the public, particularly school teachers and high school students, on the importance of breast cancer awareness by providing lecture that clearly explain the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and other benign tumors through self-breast examination that aids in the detection of early signs of breast cancer symptoms.

Reducing the Risk of Breast Cancer

Maintain a healthy weight
Obesity raises the risk of breast cancer. Avoid gaining weight over time, and try to maintain a body-mass index of 25 or less.
Eat healthy
Maintain a well-balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruit. Eat lean protein such as fish or chicken breast and eat red meat in moderation.
Keep physically active
Research suggests that increased physical activity, 30-minutes’ walk 5 days a week, reduces overall breast-cancer risk.
Breast-feed your babies for as long as possible
Women who breast-feed their babies for at least a year in total have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer later.
Breast cancer screening
In general women age 40 or more are encouraged to start breast cancer screening. In JHAH, a yearly mammogram is highly recommended. Your primary care physician can help arrange this for you.
Know your family medical history
Try to learn more about your family history of breast cancer as this may increase your risk of having breast cancer and would require further genomic testing and to start screening at an earlier age.
