You will receive an appointment confirmation for the Orthopedic Clinic by SMS and/or email before your visit. If you need to cancel or reschedule, use MyChart or call 800-305-4444 at least 24 hours before your appointment. Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment and go directly to the reception area to check in. Within five minutes, a member of our nursing staff will carry out a physical assessment and check your medical history with you. You will then have a wait of around 20 to 30 minutes before meeting your surgeon. The duration for a new referral visit is 30 minutes, and for a follow-up, 20 minutes. While your surgeon may be able to discuss a likely diagnosis for your condition at the first visit, this is often not possible until your test results have been reviewed. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, we will discuss it with you, along with a suggested treatment plan. Some tests may be carried out on your first visit, others may be scheduled.

If surgery is required, you will be invited to a clinic, usually two or three weeks before your treatment, to ensure that you are well enough for the anesthetic and operation. This may involve blood tests, X-rays and a urine sample. You may also see a specialist to discuss your care.

Shortly before your surgery, you will be scheduled for a preadmission visit to assess your condition and discuss what will happen. If a preanesthesia visit is required, it will usually take place on the same day.

You should fast and drink only clear liquids (such as water, fruit juice without pulp, carbonated drinks, and tea without milk) for eight hours before you check in for surgery. You should stop drinking two hours before surgery. Your doctor will let you know if you need to stop taking any regular medication, and you should bring any medication with you.

Following your care, and depending on your treatment, you will have follow-up appointments. These may include physiotherapy, home care or extended care.
