Dermatology
What is dermatology?
At Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH), our dermatology team provides comprehensive care if you have skin, or hair and nail problems. We diagnose, treat and advise on skin-related problems such as eczema, skin cancer and psoriasis. We can also reduce scarring caused by injury, burns, previous surgery, chickenpox or acne.
Treatment of skin conditions
Acne: A common skin condition affecting teenagers and young adults. Treatments include Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) along with nutritional and skincare guidance.
Alopecia areata: An autoimmune condition causing hair loss, managed with intralesional steroid injections.
Dermatitis and eczema: Treatment and support for inflammatory skin disorders such as atopic, contact, and discoid eczema.
Hidradenitis: An inflammatory disease causing painful boils and abscesses in skin folds.
Lichen planus: An inflammatory condition affecting skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes, treated by our specialists.
Psoriasis: A chronic inflammatory skin condition managed with methotrexate, cyclosporine, biological therapies, and phototherapy.
Skin infections: Expert care for bacterial (cellulitis, impetigo), fungal (tinea, pityriasis versicolor), and viral (warts, molluscum) infections.
Laser and light treatment
Phototherapy (light treatment): Phototherapy is an effective treatment for inflammatory conditions such as eczema, lichen planus and psoriasis, as well as pruritus (itchy skin)
Excimer laser: Our experts use an excimer laser – which emits an intense UVB light – to help restore pigmentation and treat vitiligo
Pulsed dye laser: This is used by our experts to treat port-wine stains and vascular lesions
Q-switched laser: This is used to treat pigmented birthmarks
Skin cancer treatment
Moles/birthmarks: We provide a mole checking and monitoring service, and also remove moles for diagnostic purposes
Skin biopsy: A skin biopsy is a minor procedure in which a small skin sample is removed under local anesthetic for diagnosis. This sample is then sent to the lab to be analyzed by our pathologists.
Other dermatology investigations and procedures
Botulinum toxin (Botox): If you suffer from excessive underarm sweating, our experts may suggest the use of Botox
Patch testing: TruTest is used as a patch test to check for contact allergies
Skin tags: If you want a skin tag removed, our experts can perform a procedure under anesthetic cream
What to Expect from our Dermatology Services
When arranging an appointment, we will ensure that you see one of our experienced dermatology consultants. Our dedicated team will look after you every step of the way – from giving advice at your first consultation, to offering ongoing support after your treatment.
Our Dermatology Clinic is not a self-referral service, so your Primary Care physician will make a referral for you if they believe you need a dermatologist to evaluate your skin condition. You will be invited to the Dermatology Clinic usually two to four weeks after your referral from Primary Care.
Dermatology Clinic visit
When you arrive at the Dermatology Clinic you will be checked in, and within five minutes, a dermatology nurse will carry out an initial clinical screening. Wait times are around 15-20 minutes, and your appointment will usually last around 20 minutes. Depending on your condition, you may need to take part in further imaging procedures and/or lab tests.
All procedures and any follow-up appointments can be arranged by the dermatology team at the front desk. If you have further diagnostic and/or intervention procedures, our nursing staff will explain how to prepare, and answer any questions about your next steps within dermatology services.
